So what is wrong with prefabs? And why is everyone so xxx NICE? This is what Peter keeps asking me as I announce yet again – they’re all prefabs, does the whole country live in prefabs? I blame my father (a master carpenter/builder) for this negative observation held by yours truly. And if that wasn’t all, every other signpost is to a ‘historic homestead/historic bridge/historic cottage etc.’ how is NZ ever going to get any real history if it continues building everything as a prefab? I’m speaking out loud here, and really not wanting to criticize the people here.

The Kiwis are laid back man! This is real take it easy land where we as yet have seen nothing that has had their feathers ruffled. Take this morning on the boat, I went to get a breakfast which we were going to share (not big eaters), I was given one set of serviette, knife and fork by the nice lady behind the baked beans. I thought to myself, oh no, they obviously don’t want people to share but I’ll ask anyway. So in my best English I asked very politely (using the phrase I teach my students) do you think I could possibly have an extra knife and fork? And what was the reply do you think? “Oh would you like another plate, are you going to share?” I was almost too astonished to reply, this is almost unthinkable in Europe where it often takes an effort to get a glass of tap water. Anyway, this is our (and probably those of you who have been here) typical experience of this country, they are just NICE, easy going and helpful people.

Today’s journey from Wellington (North island) to Kaikoura (South island) was probably the best day’s travelling I have ever had. I am not sure how to describe the spectacular natural beauty we’ve seen today both from the ferry and later on the north east coastal road down to here.
Supposing Walt Disney were to make a film with the title The most beautiful place on earth, supposing… that he made the basics, filled them in and then airbrushed out all the things that were wrong – the sea must be more turquoise, the mountains must be higher, give them a bit of snow on the top, make that traffic jam disappear, make some flowers appear in that hedgerow, put in a river, put in a vineyard, a boat in the distance, adjust the weather….do I need to go on? That’s just what we had, enjoy the photos.



Oogasme
Kan en landschap je zo bij de keel grijpen dat de tranen in je ogen springen? Kan een landschap je kippevel bezorgen? Neem de veerboot van Wellington naar Picton en ervaar dat het kan. Tenminste, bij Julie en mij wel. Deze emoties overvielen ons tijdens de overtocht van North Island naar South Island. Vooral wanneer de veerboot van Interislander de Marlborough Sound invaart. In een woord: adembenemend. Natuurlijk hielp de stralende, wolkenloze lucht een handje door alles een extra kleurtint te geven. De foto’s geven hopelijk een idee van hoe mooi het is.
En dat was nog niet alles. De niet eens zo lange rit van Picton naar Kaikoura evenaarde of overtrof misschien wel de indrukken die we al hadden. Nog nooit heb ik een kustweg gereden die zo indrukwekkend is als deze. Links de azuurblauwe South Pacific, recht de bergen van de Southern Alps en vergezichten die het voorstellingsvermogen te boven gaan. Enfin, Julie beschrijft dat mooier dan ik. Een eyegasme noemde ze dat vanmiddag. Ik heb daar maar oogasme van gemeekt.
We hebben drie nachten geboekt in het Top 10 Holiday Park Kaikoura. We moeten nog kiezen wat we hier gaan doen: zwemmen met de dolfijnen, op walvissenjacht, een zoektocht naar zeehondenkolonies, skydiving of gewoon een goede wandeling in de bergen. In ieder geval ons gemak ervan nemen want wat we inmiddels hebben geleerd is dat alle moois van Nieuw Zeeland zien bijna onmogelijk is in de tijd die we hebben. Julie horen nog van ons.
